Adelaide Crows 2008 - 2009 Season Begins

22 Year old Hayden Sumner is taking over in sport. Sumner just signed a 2 year deal with the Melbourne Victory in the A-League (soccer).

Now Sumner has singed up with the Adelaide Crows in the AFL. Sumner has always been a Crows fan ever since he was a young man. Now he gets the oppourtunity to coach the team after Neil Craig departed from the club at the end of last season.

Sumner was asked a lot of questions from the media wether he can handle 2 coaching jobs at the same time, and this is what he had to say.

Quote:
"Well it will certainly be tough work for me. Going from one sport to another. It will get pretty confusing at times, and i won't be able to get much sleep trying to pick sides, making transfers and doing that kind of stuff. But unlike anyone else, i am going in with this with a positive attitude, and i am really looking forward to the challenge. I mean yeah sure, i will need to rely on the assistant coaches/managers at some times of the year, but that is just common sense. But i will try and do most of the work myself. I love both the games, AFL and Soccer, and it will be fun coaching.

So will Hayden have the power and fight to coach 2 clubs at the one time. Will Hayden have to give up one sport after he knows how much effort and time he has to put in? How can someone possible be able to coach 2 clubs (in different sports) at the same time? Join in him his quest.

Key Moves

I will be making some major changes to the Adelaide Footy club. Certainly the playing positions of some certain players.
First of all Ben Rutten will become our Full Forward. We all know the Crows have lacked a Key marking forward for many years since Modra left, so i will give the big 'Truck' a run in the Forward line to see if he can provide a spark. If that doesn't pan out, i will put Rutten back in defence, and try Scott Stevens up in the Forward line. I will try and develop a key forward out of Sellar or Tippett this year as well.

Andrew McLeod will spend more time in the forward line. Has played mainly in defence since mid 2003, but McLeod who is coming towards the end of his career will certainly benifit from playing in the Forward line. It creates class and speed in the forward line, so let's hope he can bring some magic into the offence.

Brad Symes will become a huge factor in our midfield. With McLeod going into the forward line, we need someone to go into the midfield with a strong body and speed. Symes doesn't have the speed McLeod has, but he certainly does have the skill and strength. He will be a major factor, behind Scott Thompson in our step forward.

Round 1 vs Western Bulldogs

Sumners Picked Team

Coaches View: Well we've gone with a fairly experienced group of players. A very different looking team to last year aswell. Like i said early last week, i will try a lot of players in different positions to try and work out where they play best. Ben Rutten who was All-Australian Full back a couple of years ago will start at Full Foward this week just to try things out. Andy McLeod will start in the forward pocket. New recruit, Brad Moran will start in the backline, where i think he could do a lot of damage being his height, and with his athletism he could run his opponent of his legs.
Brad Symes will start in the centre. Symes is relativly fit. So he will run through the midfield with Scotty Thompson and Nathan VanBerlo, so maybe we have a fabulous midfield building along here with those 3, Brent Reilly, Bernie Vince, Chris Knights and Jason Porplyzia, things are looking bright for us.

B: Brad Moran - Nathan Bock - Kris Massie

HB: Nathan Bassett - Scott Stevens - Graham Johncock

C: Bernie Vince - Brad Symes - Brent Reilly

HF: Brett Burton - James Sellar - Chris Knights

FF: Andrew McLeod - Ben Rutten - Jason Porplyzia

R: Ivan Maric - Scott Thompson - Nathan VanBerlo

McGregor out for 3 weeks

Adelaide has confirmed that utility Forward, Ken McGregor will miss the next 3 weeks with a hamstring injury. McGregor torn his left hamstring at training on wednesday before the team selection.
The 27 year old, said, it will be hard to sit out since it's the start of the year, but hopefully it'll heal quick, so i can get back out on the track and get back into training. For now i will just have to do some pool work and try and massage it as much as possible.

McGregor had a poor 1st game, only managing the 5 possesions, but was one of the Crows goal kickers managing 1. McGregor kicked 18 goals last season for the Crows, but will hoping to beat that record, and get back to his 2005 form when he booted 31 goals from all 24 games he played.

One Pointer winners

A close game, ends in a close contest. Adelaide have defeated the Eagles by 1 point at Aami Stadium this afternoon in the round 2 clash.
A cloudy day in Adelaide, saw their team get over the line, which picks up their 1st victory of the season. In front of 23 thousand fans, Scott Stevens put on a clinic of a match, as he sored and kicked 6 goals for the home team, to get them over the line. He and Jason Porplyzia kicked their share of goals for the Crows, as they nearly kicked their entire score.

A 5 goal last quarter from the Crows to come back from behind to take the win. The Eagles who lead for the whole afternoon, lost the lead with about 3 minutes to go, when the Crows snatched the victory.
The Eagles who had a massive spread of goal kickers (11) showed they are still a force to rekon with. But it wasn't enough to stop Scott Stevens and the Crows.
Stevens had a day out, as he kicked 6 and had a whopping 35 possesions. It was certainly a dominate display from the utility forward.

Hayden Sumner was very pleased with the win and this is what he had to say.

"It was a great win. Coming from behind at 3 quarter time, and win by just the barrest of margin is very exciting. We defiently need to get out of the blocks a little earlier then we did today, and that's something we're going to work on, but when we come from behind like that and kick 5 goals to 3 in the last quarter, i guess that will do
Scotty Stevens played a ripper of a game today, what did he kick? 6 Goals? And the impressive thing was, he some how picked up 35 possesions from that as well. When has someone had a more dominate game then that? I can't really think of anyone from the top of my head.
I am very pleased with the win today, and hoping to continue that form into next week.

Adelaide: 3.0 - 4.3 - 9.4 - 14.6 - (90)
West Coast: 5.3 - 7.5 - 10.7 - 13.11 - (89)

Goals: Crows: Stevens -6, Porplyzia -3, Knights -2, Burton -2, Johncock -1
Eagles: Hansen -2, Butler -1, Priddis -1, Cox -1, Graham -1, Kerr -1, Embley -1, Lynch -1, Nicoski -1, LeCras -1, Hunter -1

Best: Crows: Stevens, Johncock, Knights, Bock, Rutten, Burton
Eagles: Cox, Rosa, Kerr, Jones, Selwood, Embley

Disposals: Crows: Stevens -35. Johncock -29, Bock -28, Knights -23
Eagles - Kerr -33, Cox -33, Selwood -31, Stenglein -30

Stevens in career form

Adelaide utility Scott Stevens is certainly in Career best form, with another Best on Ground display in the Showdown on Sunday.
26 possesions and 5 goals, in a dominant display, had the Forward gain full Brownlow votes, and saw his team pick up the victory by 29 points.
Stevens featured with 5 goals, while his fellow Forward, Brett Burton who kicked 3 goals, it was hard for the young Power to stop.

The Crows won Showdown number 22. But with the Power inaccuracy, it was a no contest in the end, when the Crows kicked away in the first quarter.
Stevens who kicked 4 goals in the first quarter looked very unstopable. But coach Sumner decided to change the team around a bit, and rested Stevens, and then put him down back just to give some game time to the younger players.

It was a hard fought contest, like all Showdowns are. But it was the Crows turn to celebrate. Brad Symes has certainly settled into this Crows side, as he again was the Crows leading disposal getter, picking up another 31. While expected future captain, Nathan VanBerlo was very good, picking up 26 disposals off the wing.
For the Power, Michael Pettigrew through his name into being one of the best on ground for the Power picking up 30 disposals, while spending some time on the dominate Stevens.

It was the Crows 2nd win from their first 3 starts. New coach Sumner was very pleased with the win.

No one can stop Buddy

In a 8 goal performance at Aurora Stadium, Lance Franklin showed he is the dominate Forward in the AFL at the moment. Playing on one of the best Full Backs in the game, Franklin dominated the game, as he slotted home 8 goals from Full Forward.

His team kicked away from the Crows in the 3rd quarter to produce a 54 point against the Crows in their Round 4 match. Franklin and Roughead stole the show after half time, booting 11 goals between them, and showing that Hawthorn are certainly in the running for this year's Premiership.
It was a inaacurate day for the Crows however, and their famous Goal kicker, Stevens only managed to put on major through the big sticks. However, Captain Simon Goodwin found his range, as he booted 3 goals for the visitiors, while upcoming star Chris Knights kicked 2.
But overall it was a miserable day for the Crows when Franklin let loose after half time.
22,461 at Aurora Stadium is a good crowd in Launcestorn. But it was certainly Hawthorn's day today as they soared away with a big win in the end.

You know Hawthorn are a very good side. They have some power house Forwards in Roughead and Frankling. There midfield is top notch with Hodge, Sewell, Crawford, Birchall, and their backline is steady, with Croad, Guerra and the likes, they will certainly be hard to beat this year i rekon, as they should challenged the likes of Geelong and Collingwood for the Premiership, said the Crows Coach Hayden Sumner.

Hawthorn: 3.1 - 7.4 - 12.6 - 17.8 - (110)
Adelaide: 2.5 - 3.10 - 6.11 - 7.14 - (56)

Crows: Goodwin -3, Knights -2, Burton -1, Stevens -1

Best: Hawks: Franklin, Brown, Sewell, Birchall, Crawford, Hodge
Crows: Goodwin, Symes, Stevens, Knights, Johncock, Rutten

Disposals: Hawks: C. Brown -33, B. Sewell -32, S. Crawford -29, G. Birchall -28
Crows: B. Symes -31, S. Goodwin -25, S. Stevens -23, B. Rutten -22

Injuries: Hawks: Michael Osbourne (concussion) - 1 week

NEW: Patrick Dangerfield 18, (Geelong Falcons)

Dangerfield to debut

Adelaide’s first selection in the 2007 National Draft at pick 10, Dangerfield caught the club’s attention as a dashing and exciting player who shows distinct ability to win the contested ball. He is a graduate of the AIS-AFL Academy and toured South Africa in early 2007. Dangerfield was a member of the Vic Metro side at the 2007 Under 18 Championships. He was ranked in the top three for both the 30 metre repeat sprints (23.96sec) and the vertical leap (73cm) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft Camp and was also a top ten ranked performer in the 20m sprint (2.92sec). Dangerfield won the 100m and 400m titles at the Victorian Secondary Schools Athletics in October 2007. Patrick will train with Adelaide in the pre-season but return home to finish Year 12 at Oberon High School before moving to Adelaide full-time at the end of next year. He will continue to play for the Geelong Falcons under-18 side in 2008 and may be available to play in the SANFL during the school holidays. Although staying in Victoria to finish his studies, Dangerfield is keenly anticipating his move to Adelaide. “I’m very, very excited,” he said. “Obviously it’s going to be a big change in lifestyle, but Adelaide’s near the water and I like surfing and everything like that so I’m very excited.”
