What is acceptable and what is not?

Just read this article:

Comedians and controversy

"The BBC Trust has ruled that popular satirical gameshow Mock The Week breached guidelines over comments broadcast about swimmer Rebecca Adlington.... It followed the Olympic champion's success at the Beijing Olympics. "The thing that nobody really said about Rebecca Adlington is that she looks pretty weird. She looks like someone who's looking at themselves in the back of a spoon," Frankie Boyle had said.

He went on to make another remark about the swimmer's appearance: "When she arrived back on the flight she met her boyfriend. Did you see her boyfriend? He was really attractive. He was like a male model. So from that I have deduced that Rebecca Adlington is very dirty."

Conversely, the BBC Trust found that Frankie Boyle's joke about the Queen did not breach editorial guidelines. Centring around what Her Majesty didn't say during her Christmas broadcast: Frankie Boyle offered: "I'm now so old that my p**** is haunted.
"

Now I don't think either of those are that bad. If anything the second one is worse, but they are both funny. I just don't understand how that first one can be in any way unacceptable. It's a comedy show, people are going to be made fun off. If Frankie had said something like "9/11, that was hilarious" I would understand.

So what are your opinions, do you think the BBC is over-reacting or do you think Frankie Boyle is generally unacceptable and comedians these days are being more and more extreme to catch the public's attention and it needs to stopped? Personally if they start reigning people like Frankie Boyle in, the BBC might begin to see their viewing figures dwindle.

Highlander999 added 0 Minutes and 40 Seconds later...

Oh and for the record I just googled Rebecca Adlington. Frankie is right

The episode was shown ages ago, repeated on Dave last week, and in fact was very funny. Why do these people with no sense of humour watch Mock The Week? Do people just sit there and watch TV with the number of Ofcom tapped into their phone? I hate these people.

Frankie won't upset them again though, he's left Mock The Week.

It's not the BBC who have been moaning about this, it was the BBC who broadcast it. Unless you mean that the jokes about Adlington (quite frankly, I would) were offensive?
