For a while now Kallis has been classed as the best test all rounder, followed closely by Andrew Flintoff. Over the last two years Vettori has become a pure all rounder, and the stats prove it. With Flintoff retired, and Vettori's game improving by every game, who would you prefer in your Test XI? Stats since the start of 2008: Vettori Matches: 20 Runs: 1204 Bat Ave: 44.59 Wickets: 71 Bowl Ave: 29.60 NZ have played: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Kallis Matches: 19 Runs: 995 Bat Ave: 35.53 Wickets: 36 Bowl Ave: 29.63 SA have played: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India and West Indies. The level of opposition is fairly similar so please don't use that as an excuse.

I dunno if you can really compare, one's a number 3/4 and bowls fast the other a spinner batting at 6/7/8. Stats-wise it's Vettori so if I had to pick one, it'd be him.

nz0003 added 2 Minutes and 2 Seconds later... It's been a fair dip then, almost 2 years. To say Vettori isn't class is ridiculous, both class players.

| ICC Board Member AKA: Gajan, Sweatband Member Since: Sep 2008 Location: Melbourne, Australia National Team: Australia Domestic Team: Victoria, Somerset, Deccan | I have to say Kallis. Far better batsman. Kallis can be named as one of the greatest batsman of all time, but Vettori can't be named as one of the greatest bowlers of all time. And I'd say their bowling's about equal, as far as Spin<>Pace comparisons can go. Pretty much, Kallis' batting superiority is further than Vettori's bowling advantage... | ||

| 1st XI Cricketer Member Since: Aug 2009 Location: Sydney National Team: Australia Domestic Team: New South Wales | I would have neither as there are better spinners around the world to pick from than Vettori and better quicks to pick than Kallis, but, in the interest of argumenting Vettori has twice as many wickets as Kallis does against Bangladesh in the same amount of test matches, South Africa won both tests Kallis scored a century in and New Zealand lost both tests Vettori scored his centuries. Vettori has bowled 850 odd overs in those 20 tests, Kallis has bowled less than half of that so that suggests that Vettori is taking wickets by sheer weight of overs bowled as Vettori is New Zealand's strike bowler and Kallis is not South Africa's main strike bowler. The only statistics that mean anything are Kallis' averages of 54 and 31 respectively being better than Vettori's 29 and 33. | ||

WHy take stats from 2008, they are no more relavent than carrer stats, one good year has a much larger effect on those stats. Kallis is up their with the best batsman of this generation, while Vettori is definately not the best spinner, especially in test cricket. Vettori has had a great turn of form over the last few years but even with that his bowling hasn't become extra-ordinary. Kallis does his specialty far better than Vettori. Vettori is a great player but if after a dip in form, Kallis still averages over 50 with the bat, it shows what he can do. Kallis' bowling has like Vettori's batting improved immensly from his early days.
