Following the departure of David O'Leary earlier in the week, Ellis took no time what so ever to confirm Briggs as the new man in charge. ![]() O'Leary: Left for 'personal reasons' Speaking at the news conference today, Ellis was pleased to give the somewhat unknown Briggs a shot at the big time. "Of course we considered it carefully, we had some outstanding candidates apply for the job, but in Shaun we have a young manager who is very ambitious and I feel he is the right man to take the club forward." ![]() Ellis: Pleased with appointment Briggs himself had a few words for the doubters who had criticised Ellis for such a rushed and 'un-professional' appointment. "Young English managers are rare in the Premiership, and the only way clubs are going to change this is if they take a chance on someone, like Doug has with me, and I can assure all the fans that Aston Villa Football Club WILL go places under my management." When asked about potential transfer targets, Briggs gave little away about stressed the need for youngsters to make the step up to the first team. "The club is renowned for producing quality young players, look at Lee (Hendrie) and Gareth (Barry) they both made the step up and look at them now, both with England caps to their names, and it is one of my personal aims to ensure the youth setup remains as strong as it has ever been under my management and that we continue to give youngsters a chance in the first team." We await to see the impact Briggs has on Aston Villa, if any.

| ICC Board Member Member Since: Aug 2004 Location: Bradford, UK National Team: England Domestic Team: Yorkshire, Bradford City FC, Arsenal FC | Sunday 10th July 2005 I left the press conference together with Doug and he walked me to my new office. Doug introduced me to my secrutary, the lovely Zara, and I was instruced to check my e-mail immediately for any new messages from the board. As expected, Doug had left me a quick message regarding the thoughts of himself and his fellow board members. ![]() £3m! a bit too lacklusture for my liking, but I have a squad of very capable players already, so that £3m will be used in small amounts. I decided to take a look at the list of first team players to see if any areas needed strengthening, and I was quite pleased with the strength in debt that we had. A good blend of youth and experience is what I am after, and it seems I have that with the first team. ![]() The midfield needs looking at, Im not content with the current amount of wingers we have, so I will look at the market to see what I can find. Maybe another goalkepper is needed as well, decisions, decisions! Lets see what impression I make on the guys tomorrow in my first training session.

| ICC Board Member Member Since: Aug 2004 Location: Bradford, UK National Team: England Domestic Team: Yorkshire, Bradford City FC, Arsenal FC | I arrived home later that night and started to draw up some possible transfer targets that I would look further into in the coming week. With a £3m budget in my hands, to bring some of the players I was thinking of in would require some of the current first team to leave in order to open up a suitable kitty. With my knowledge of the lower leagues quite high, especially in England having worked there most of my coaching career, I was more than aware of a couple of players who I could bring in that would definately make an impact at this level, and it would be those that I would enquire into first before moving on to the bigger targets. ![]()
